Background
The Investment Operations Department (INO) of IDB Invest is responsible for clients and partners’ engagement for the origination, structuring, closing and supervision of transactions and projects that meet our requirements. The business cycle goes from the identification, selection, origination and execution of transactions to their monitoring.
INO follows a matrix model, with three segment Divisions covering Infrastructure and Energy, Financial Institutions and Corporates, and transversal areas such as the Financial Products Division (in charge of capital market solutions, trade and supply chain finance, equity and resource mobilization), the Portfolio Management Division, and the Advisory Services Team.
The team: the Financial Institutions Division (FLI) is organized in five teams, four with a geographic country coverage: (i) Andean, (ii) Southern Cone, and (iii) Mexico, Central America and (iv) the Caribbean; and one in charge of the Investment Funds business. Within each of those teams, Investment Officers (“IOs”) lead high quality, creditworthy, and environmentally and socially sound projects that result in significant development impact. Our Division maintains, as deemed necessary, the responsibilities for customer relationships and product specialist’s engagement in areas such as debt financing, debt capital markets, equity and quasi-equity instruments, as well as resource mobilization and technical cooperation.
About the position
Location: Colombia, Ecuador or Peru
As Director of the Andean Region, you will report directly to FLI Managing Director. You will lead a dedicated team of approximately 4 to 8 full-time IOs with specific expertise in Financial Intermediaries client segment. The Andean Region encompasses Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela.
Your role will be to lead and support the team in developing new business opportunities, client engagements as well as to supervise the structuring and execution of new transactions in order to meet the goals of the Division as a whole and in the Andean Region in particular. Furthermore, you will work closely with other organizational divisions/teams of IDB Invest and IDB, as needed, to achieve coherence within the IDBG’s overall financial sector portfolio.

Language Skills: Oral and written professional proficiency in English and Spanish required; knowledge of Portuguese and/ or French is preferable.

National staff contract, 36 months initially, renewable upon mutual agreement.

What you will do
- Lead the execution of the Division’s business and action plans within the Andean Region;
- Supervise and mentor direct reports, foster a culture of employee engagement, conduct performance reviews and evaluation.
- Oversee transaction from the prospecting stage through origination, structuring, negotiation, internal approvals and financial closing ensuring that the investment teams are properly staffed and motivated.
- Maintain constant dialogue with local partners in the financial sector industry, public and private institutions in the financial markets, banking associations, investors, governmental and regulatory agencies (at the sovereign and sub-sovereign levels), seeking to build new relationships to generate new business opportunities.
- Maintain continuous collaboration and communications with other stakeholders within the IDBG, including other business development areas, environmental, social and corporate governance safeguards, development effectiveness, legal, risk, advisory services and integrity functions, among others. This collaboration is integral to the creation of strong development bank transactions.
- Support product development and other initiatives at the Division level to help address the needs of client and countries.
- Identify upstream opportunities that can generate more development impact through our projects or through market interventions in the countries.
- Provide support for the development of IDBG Country Strategies and the IDB Invest’s multi-year Business Plans in relation to financial sector development.
- Participate in conferences and seminars and other events appropriate to maintaining and building sector knowledge, networking and promoting IDB Invest financial sector related capabilities;
- Promote innovation and encouraging staff to adopt changes being introduced in the marketplace and keeping abreast of opportunities for new products and services.
What you will need
Education: Masters, MBA, or equivalent in finance, business administration, economics, development studies, engineering, or other relevant field.
Experience:
- Proven background in implementing complex and diverse projects with financial intermediaries, preferably in an international environment and in leading project teams in complex transactions.
- More than 10 years of experience acting in a similar role in the private sector, private banks, investment firms, corporate and investment banking sector, or development finance institutions focused on the private sector; having worked in different cultural settings, preferably in Latin America.
- Strong change management experience in an evolving and complex environment to identify and inspire change to best serve the needs of the organization in the future.
- Strong client relationship experience and skills, collaborative approach, fostering and maintaining effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- The capacity to plan and manage human resources and operations to achieve quality results in a productive and financially sustainable manner.
Language Skills: Oral and written professional proficiency in English and Spanish required; knowledge of Portuguese and/ or French is preferable.
