Position Summary
The Family Support Liaison is responsible for providing outreach and support to families in Maryland with children newly identified as Deaf or Hard of Hearing. This role focuses on ensuring families are informed about available resources, services, and support networks. The Liaison will engage with families to facilitate connections to early intervention services, offer guidance on navigating the Maryland Early Intervention and IEP system, and provide ongoing support to ensure a smooth transition as children approach age three.
This position requires a strong understanding of Deaf Culture, the ability to work with ASL interpreters, and familiarity with Maryland's early intervention and education systems. The role is fully remote, with flexible hours, including occasional evening availability to accommodate family schedules.
Key Responsibilities
Family Outreach & Support
- Initiate contact with families of children newly identified as Deaf or Hard of Hearing in Maryland.
- Provide information on available resources, including early intervention services, parent support networks, and educational options.
- Offer free memberships to relevant organizations, including the American Society for Deaf Children (ASDC), Hands & Voices (H&V), and AG Bell.
- Obtain consent to add families to the Maryland Email List for ongoing communication and updates.
Early Intervention & System Navigation
- Ensure families are aware of and accessing early intervention services.
- Assist in making referrals on behalf of families if services are not yet in place.
- Provide guidance on Maryland's early intervention (IFSP) and Individualized Education Program (IEP) processes.
Ongoing Family Engagement
- Maintain regular contact with families, with a minimum of quarterly check-ins or more frequently as needed.
- Address questions and concerns, ensuring families feel supported throughout their journey.
- Record and maintain accurate data on family interactions and service referrals.
- At age 2.5, initiate discussions with families about the transition to preschool services, ensuring all necessary systems and supports are in place.
Collaboration & Professional Engagement
- Attend the Maryland Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (MD EHDI) Stakeholders Conference.
- Participate in meetings hosted by the Maryland Department of Health as requested.
- Work closely with the Executive Director to align family support efforts with organizational goals.
Qualifications & Skills
- Strong understanding of Deaf Culture and the ability to work effectively with ASL interpreters.
- Knowledge of Maryland's Early Intervention system and IEP processes.
- Experience working with families of children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently in a remote setting with flexible scheduling.
