Executive Director

The Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA) empowers people to ride bikes, build connections, and transform places. WABA envisions a just and sustainable transportation system where walking, biking, and transit are the best ways to get around. The member-supported organization, founded in 1972, serves the Washington, DC metropolitan region. WABA has exclusively retained Nonprofit HR to conduct a recruitment campaign for its next Executive Director.

WABA’s next Executive Director will lead the organization through its next phase of growth, grounded in equity and justice. They will rally the region—staff, supporters, funders, and beyond—around an inspiring, inclusive vision.

Because fundraising underpins WABA’s success in its mission, the next Executive Director will invest much of their time and energy in cultivating relationships, building excitement around a compelling future, and integrating fundraising into every aspect of the organization. The ED will have demonstrated experience in nonprofit fundraising: donor cultivation and stewardship, diversifying revenue streams, and establishing new, strategic partnerships.

Because the DC region’s bicycling and transportation advocacy communities carry legacies of racism and sexism -- and because those legacies continue to affect WABA’s ability to achieve its mission -- the new Executive Director must possess a deep understanding of structural inequality and how it impacts transportation equity. And they must be able to work with—and grow—a strong and diverse network of community stakeholders to continue to build equity into the overall strategy and direction of the organization.

WABA’s next Executive Director will lead the organization through its 2025 Strategic Plan and an exciting time of growth. They must develop, inspire, and retain a high-performing staff of about 20, and ensure WABA lives its mission and values by fostering a culture of trust and accountability. WABA is a collegial environment where talent, inclusion, and culture are critical, and the Executive Director will work in close partnership with that talented team, community-based organizations, community advocates, and an engaged Board of Directors to advance them all to a shared vision. As such, the position requires excellent communication and problem-solving skills.

WABA requires substantive management experience and prefers candidates who have managed senior employees across multiple functional areas and successfully improved organizational structure. The Executive Director should also have a successful track record of change management and organizational development, process improvement, and strategic planning.  The annual salary range for this position starts at $120,000 and is commensurate based on experience. In addition, we offer a competitive benefits package.

For consideration, interested candidates who meet these criteria should submit a cover letter and resume. Your cover letter must address your experience and relevant qualifications.
