Position summary

The Lead Digital Communications Strategist (aka Principal Digital Strategist) leads and mentors Guttmacher’s digital communications team and is responsible for developing an effective digital communications strategy to promote the mission and visibility of the Institute among key audiences via social media, web and email platforms. Monitoring public policy and research developments on sexual and reproductive health and rights issues, the Lead Digital Communications Strategist identifies opportunities for engagement on all of the Institute’s channels, with a primary focus on social media. This position manages efforts to improve the Institute’s website performance and usability, with a focus on user experience, and coordinates with other teams within the Communications & Publications division and across the Institute to maximize outreach and dissemination efforts while maintaining brand and message consistency across platforms.
 

Responsibilities

Develops a cohesive and innovative digital content strategy for enhancing the Institute’s overall communications efforts and fundraising goals

  • Develops and oversees the implementation of a plan to promote the Institute’s work across digital channels, and collaborates with the Communications, Design, Editing and Production Teams in the creation of cohesive content for social media, email platforms and the website
  • Supervises and works in close collaboration and thought partnership with the members of the digital communications team to expand the Institute’s reach among new and existing online audiences, including by strategically inserting the Institute’s voice to key social media conversations and activities
  • Develops and executes a multipronged strategy to grow the Institute’s social media following and engagement, and collaborates with the Design Team, external consultants, and others to create visual assets (static, interactive and video) for use on social media channels
  • Develops and oversees the execution of a plan to grow the Institute’s email program, and supports efforts to improve email list growth, retention, open rates and engagement
  • Works with other staff in the Communications & Publications division on web content coordination, supports efforts to improve website navigation and user experience, and oversees efforts to drive traffic to key content on the Institute’s website and/or promote key content via other channels
  • Oversees Guttmacher’s online marketing and advertising program, including the management of relationships with some external digital-related consultants
  • Helps identify and support opportunities to incorporate fundraising into the Institute’s digital communications strategy in coordination with the Individual Giving Team, particularly around days of action, Giving Tuesday, and the Year-End Campaign
  • Informs budget development and coordinates with project managers to ensure the inclusion of social media and other digital outreach into project plans, as needed
  • Oversees the digital team in monitoring how the Institute, its core issues, and related news and policy developments are discussed on social media platforms by key audiences and prominent individuals
  • Monitors the impact of the Institute’s digital efforts and how they supplement the Institute’s overall communications strategy, including monitoring the Institute’s website performance, social media, and e-mail performance, and provides periodic analytics reports to leadership, project teams and donors
  • In consultation with the Communications & Publications Management Team, identifies and explores the use of new technologies and platforms to promote the Institute’s work
  • Performs other job-related tasks and projects as assigned
     

Qualifications and skills

  • 7–10 years’ experience in communications/media/public relations/marketing environment
  • Digital and social savvy with a passion for communicating complex topics; familiarity interpreting research for a general audience a plus
  • Experience in social media management and digital strategy, online community building and performance tracking
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to develop strong narrative through digital media
  • Experience with creating website content through a user experience lens, and website content promotion on social platforms a plus.
  • Solid understanding of online and email performance metrics
  • Knowledge of, or interest in, sexual and reproductive health and rights
  • Proficiency with social media platforms and management tools, website content management systems, basic HTML and Microsoft Office essential; proficiency in Canva, Adobe Premiere, Asana, Sprout Social, Drupal and Mailchimp a plus
  • Project management and staff supervision experience
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Self-motivation together with ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
  • Ability to work under deadlines and juggle priorities and projects
  • Spanish or French language proficiency a plus

 

Salary and benefits

Salary starting at $96,000 to 154,000, commensurate with experience.
